Task checklist ticket template

Not every ticket is a user story. Technical work like infrastructure, refactoring or chores is clearer as a summary plus a checklist of concrete steps, so anyone picking it up can see progress at a glance.

Your input

set up nightly postgres backups to s3, keep 14 days, alert us if a backup fails

Generated ticket

[Infra] Set up nightly PostgreSQL backups to S3

Task Checklist

  • Create a private S3 bucket with a 14-day lifecycle rule
  • Add a nightly job (02:00 UTC) that runs pg_dump and uploads the compressed dump
  • Give the job write-only credentials for the bucket
  • Send an alert to the team channel when a backup fails or is missing
  • Restore the latest backup into a scratch database to verify it

Notes

  • Dependencies: AWS account access, alerting channel webhook
  • Testing required: one successful restore before closing the ticket

Tips for better task tickets

  1. 01Start each item with a verb

"Create", "Add", "Verify": every checklist item should be an action someone can finish and tick off.

  2. 02Make the last item a check

End with how you know it works, like a test restore or a smoke test. Otherwise "done" is a matter of opinion.

  3. 03Keep items small

If one item takes more than a day, it is a ticket of its own. Small items keep the checklist honest about progress.

  4. 04Name the dependencies

Access, credentials and other teams are what blocks tasks. Listing them up front saves the first day of waiting.
